Solidago decurrens

From a great lecture at AHVMA by Patricia Kyritsi Howell:
Goldenrod (Solidago spp.)
Action: anti-catarrhal, astringent, diaphoretic, vulnerary, anti-lithic, sedative
Part used: aerial (when In flower)
Indication: Relieves upper respiratory system inflammation and congestion.  Relieves sore throat. Anti-inflammatory for the digestive and urinary systems.
Functions:
1. Kidney fluid congestion and Ki Qi stagnation-promotes urination, drains fluid congestion, and relieves edema; regulate Bladder Qi, clear phlem and relieve spasms (Ross)
2. Relieves allergies, resolves mucus damp and stops discharges- treat damp cold/heat- treats sinusitis, rhinitis, clears Lung Phlegm
3. Clears Damp Heat and reduces inflammation and infection
treats intestinal damp heat.

JEREMY ROSS:
Allergy to S. virguaurea (european spp.),  although than that no side effects reported, no contraindications listed, no drug interactions reported.
Here is some info on Goldenrod...in the Americas there are between forty and sixty species.  Europe originally only had one species, Solidago virga-aurea.  Now, most of the U.S. species have been introduced into Europe
Tissue state: atrophy, torpor, depression

WOOD:
"The root, leaf and the flower of the Solidago is predominately bitter and pungent, leading to the traditional use as a carminative to stimulate secretions from the stomach.  The flavonoids make it cooling as will as stimulating or warming, so it has been used on infected wounds that need to be simultaneously cooled off and stimulated.  The aromatic essential oils carry it into the respiratory sphere..It is particularly important as a kidney remedy, stimulating the kidneys to greater activity following stressful illnesses or even psychological stress.  It acts somewhat like an alterative on the skin and scalp, a specific indication being scabs and sores on the scalp and legs."
Specific Indications:
1. tired, worn out, feet tired; allergies, conjunctiva red, glazed; enlarged wet boggy tongue; cold stomach, inactive digestion, urine dark, scanty; or clear and copious;  dry, scaly skin or edema and swelling; old conditions of the lungs, exhausted, tired lower back

PETER HOLMES:
Peter Holmes says that "two areas that benefit the most : the urinary system and the upper respiratory system.  In damp heat, the herb is restoring, drying, anticatarrhal, cooling and anti-inflammatory.  The kidney are rehabilitated functionally and structurally.  Water elimination is increased so that acute urinary obstruction is promptly relieved.  Goldenrod can be used for long-term treatment of urinary and liver conditions with deficiency, stagnation and fluid congestion.  Goldenrod's tonic astringent effects are most prominent in the nasopharinx."
Peter Holmes classifies as mild herb miminal toxicity
Energetics: bitter, astringent, cool and dry
Meridians affected: Liver, Kd, TH

RADEMACHER:
Dr. Rademacher, "very old and good kidney medicine."  He used it with persons who were recovering from an illness and their urine turned dark, and exhaustion set in.

CLARKE:
Use is the same in homeopathics:  Dr. Clarke said a keynote "..the grand keynote lies in the condition and the action of the kidneys and the quality of their secretions."

GERARD:
Gerard (1633)-is cleansing and astringent; promotes urination and helps to expel urinary stones by clearing obstructing phlegm from the urinary vessels; helps to stop bleeding and to heal wounds and ulcers.

COOK:
Cook- Solidago rigida- "the leaves are quite astringent with mild tonic properties; and has been used in passive menorrhagia, and other forms of bleeding.  Externally they been commended for indolent and fungous ulcer and also as an infection in foul leucorrhea
Solidago odora- "the leaves are a pleasant aromatic relaxant, useful in colic, flatulence, nausea, and to disguise the taste of harsh medicines."

ELLINGTON:
Ellington-" This agent has been used as a domestic remedy for backaches and diseases of the kidneys for centuries in German.  Radamacher spoke highly of its properties.  Homeopathic physicians prescribe it where there is pain in the kidneys, from any cause, extending forward toward the abdomen,  Pain in circumscribed spots over the kidneys. difficult and scanty urination, where there is nephritis.  Urinary obstructions in the early stage of dropsy.  In dysentery, diarrhea and in cholera morbus, and infusion or a few drops of the oil in hot water, will be found of service."

CULPEPER:
Culpeper-"Venus claims the herb, and therefore to be sure it respects beauty lost...recommends it much against the stone in the reins and kidneys, and to provoke urine in abundance, whereby also the gravel and Stone may be voided...it stays bleeding in any part of the body, and of wounds; also the fluxes of the humours, the bloody-flux and women's courses...It is a sovereign wound herb inferior to none, both for the inward and outward hurts; green wounds, old sores and ulcers are quickly cured therewith.  It also is of special use to all lotions for sores or ulcers i the mouth, throat,  The decoction also helps to fasten the teeth that are loose in the gums."
