Petroselinum crispum |
|
|
|
| Parsley Petroselinium comes from
Greek meaning "celery of the rocks"; its growth among
rocks is a signature in traditional herbalism for a
kidney or stone-breaking remedy. Parsley is one of the
five "opening roots" of traditional Greek/Arabic
medicine used to remove obstructions to the movement of
blood, lymph, sweat, urine, stool and menstrual blood
(the others are celery, fennel, butcher's broom, and
asparagus.) Parsley is a biennial which has been
naturalized in many temperate regions. It can grow in
grassy, rocky or waste areas. It is widely cultivated. |

| WOOD: |
| Matt Wood adds that Parsley treats
tissue states of depression, torpor, and atrophy
Specific Indications: weak anemic persons; swollen
glands, mastitis-with retention of milk; colic,
gastrointestinal pain, spasm, cramp, flatulence;
urethritis with the urine causes a scalding sensation,
glutinous slime in the urine, retention of urine,
nephritis, and cystitis especially when the urine is
thick, irritating, and painful He explains the action of
parsley as "the presence of minerals in Parsley draws
water into areas that are dehydrated and mineralized,
breaking up hardness; strengthening diuresis and drives
out stagnant waters through rejuvenated kidneys. The
mild bitterness increases digestion in the stomach and
raises the internal heat. Parsley is warming,
nourishing, thinning and opening. |
| |
| CULPEPER: |
| It is under the dominion of Mercury
and is very comfortable to the stomach; promotes urine
and women's courses, expels wind from the stomach and
bowels, and doth a little open the body, but the root
much more. It openeth obstructions both of the liver
and spleen..Galen commended it for the falling sickness,
and to provoke urine mightily especially if the roots be
boiled and eaten like parsnips. The seed is effectual
to provoke urine and women's courses, to expel wind, to
break the stone, and ease the pains and torments
thereof; it is also effectual in lethargy, and is as
good for coughs...distilled water of parsley..to give
their children when are troubled with wind in the
stomach and belly, and is good for the aged. The leaves
of parsley laid to the eyes that are inflamed with hear,
or swollen, relives them...The juice dripped into the
ears with a little wine, easeth the pains. |
| |
| WILLIAM SALMON: |
| Parsley "is peculiar against the
cholick in the stomach and bowels, expels wind, opens
obstruction of the liver, spleen, reins and womb, gives
ease in the strangury, provokes urine, is said to break
and expel the stone, gravel, sand and tartarous slime;
is profitable against the jaundice, dropsy, and falling
sickness, provokes the terms in women, facilitates the
birth, and resits and expels poison." |
| |
| SAMUEL HAHNEMANN: |
| Hahnemann considered drop doses of
parsley tincture to be specific for gonorrhoea with
discharges of slime or mucus in the urine. |
| |
| DR. CERNEY: |
| "Parsley supplies properties that
maintain the proper function of the thyroid and
adrenals. It maintains the well-being of the smaller
blood vessels. Of particular note is its effectiveness
in the treatment of weak eyes and other diseases of the
eyes." Parsley leaf tea is known as a general tonic for
the adrenals. Caution: Parsley will reduce lactation and
hence contraindicated during lactation. No known drug
interactions (BHC2) Side effects rare, contact allergic
skin reactions (BHC2) |
| |
| FELTER: |
| Parsley is employed with marked
success in dysmenorrhea, very severe cases yielding to
its curative influence....In colliquative seating of
phthisis, as well as in the profuse perspiration
attending cases of severe illness, it exercises a
restraining influence...Use it in nephritis and cystitis
when the urine is thick and very irritating and painful.
It lessens irritation and increases the amount of urine
and thus fives relief. It is a good remedy in strangury,
urethritis or gonorrhoea with scalding passages of
urine, lessening the irritability of the parts.
Favorable results are obtained from its use in ascities,
anasarca and any may be used for a considerable length
of time. It is not contraindicated by inflammations.
The seed contains a volatile oil, apoil, which is a
nerve stimulant, and also has some antiperidotic
properties. Indications-dropsy, especially that
following scarlatina and other eruptive disease;
retention of urine; nephritis and cystitis, especially
when the urine is thick, irritating and painful;
urethritis when the urine cause a scalding sensation. |
| |
| COOK: |
| Cook says that it greatly increases
the flow of urine; and may easily be made to exhaust the
kidneys. In ordinary suppressions of the urine, it is a
reliable article and give relief in strangury, aching in
the back hysteria where deficient excretion of urine is
much concerned. It is better adapted to recent than
chronic cases; and may be given even when sup-acute
inflammation of the kidneys is present. The leaves are
reputed good, as a fomentation, in bruises, swelled
breasts, and enlarged glands. |
| |
| HILDEGARD VON BINGEN: |
| Parsley is of a robust nature and
has in it more heat than cold. It grows from wind and
humidity. It is better and more useful for a person
when it is raw, rather than cooked in a food. When it
is eaten it attenuates the fevers which lightly touch a
person when they strike him, It generates seriousness
in a person's mind. But one who ails in his heart,
spleen, or sides should cook parsley in wine with a
little vinegar and honey. One who is in pain from a
stone should take parsley and add a third part
saxifrage. |
