One of our simplest GI herbs; Psyllium, Plantago ovata, an herb that optimizes intestinal bacterial populations with a trophic effect on the intestinal mucosal epithelium.
Psyllium, Plantago ovata, the seeds are used to provide fiber (the husks) or mucilage (the seeds).  The roughage stimulates the bowel whereas the mucilage coats and soothes.  The fivber is believed to get into the circulation and improve conditions of the vasculature.

Energetics: sweet and neutral
Meridians afftects: spleen, ST, Colon
Propertites: demulcent, laxative.  The outer husks are used as a bulk-fiber laxative .  The whole seed is a lubribationg laxative.
Uses: Internally, treats acute or chronic constipation which is dry, husk; externally, used to relief skin irritation, make a whole-seed paste.

Michael Tierra suggest for dry constipation, combine two parts psyllium seed husks together with equal parts flax and chia seeds.
