Rehmannia glutinosa, Shizhao, Wikipedia  

Chinese Herb, Rehmannia glutinosa.  In our western usage, there is an incredible amount of research with the use of this herb in renal failure. Rehmannia is a perennial which is found in well-drained stony ground along roadsides and in woods. It is found on Mountain slopes and trailsides from near sea level to 1100 metres.

The indications for this herb is different if it has been prepared or if it is fresh.

Prepared Rehmannia: Shu Di Huang
Properties: sweet, slightly warm
Channels entered: Liver, Kidney
 
Chinese therapeutic actions: (Chen, Chen)
1. Nourishes Blood-used to treat blood deficiency with consequent lack of nourishment to the liver and kidney thus improving the circulation to animals in renal insufficiency; also helps with reproductive issues due to blood deficiency creating blood stagnation; i.e. chronic uterine bleeding, or infertility; restless foetus, miscarriage

2. Tonifies Liver and Kidney YIn-soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, night sweats-thin rapid pulse with red tongue; strongly tonify the yin in cases of wasting and thirsting (Xiao Ke) syndrome.

3. Replenishes Jing (essence) and fills the marrow-for developmentally delays or premature ageing.

4. Arrests Cough and Wheezing- a deficient cough with wheezing and asthma with Kidney deficiency and inabily to gasp the lung Qi
 
Traditional Rehmannia is charred if used for any cases with bleeding.

Sheng Di Huang is the dried unprocessed root.
It is sweet, bitter and cold.
Channels entered: Heart, Liver, Kidney
Actions:
1.Clears Heat and Cools the blood-treat heat invading the ying and xue level; treat bleeding due to heat in the xue level with blood being "forced
out of the vessels"; treats skin conditions which are caused by heat in the xue level with signs of urticaria, rashes and itching
2. Nourishes Yin and promotes generation of Body Fluids-treating febrile disorders with the yin injured.
 
Xian Di Huang-is the fresh root; it is bitter, sweet and very cold; compared to the other forms of Rehmannia, it has a weaker function to nourish yin but a stronger function to clear heat, cool blood ,relieve thirst and dispel irritability.
